Claude Opus 5.5, released by Anthropic on 22 September 2026, makes motion design by writing code: an HTML page animated frame by frame, rendered to video. Anthropic doesn't sell it as a motion tool; creators' demos made that reputation. In Premiere Pro, the Ask AI agent uses it to place animations on the spoken words.

**Transparency**: I build Black Hat Editor Tools, the plugin used as the example here.

Checked on 2 October 2026: Anthropic's announcement, creators' demos, the plugin's code.

## What is Claude Opus 5.5, and is it good at motion design?

Anthropic's newest model, first of the Claude 5.5 family ([Anthropic, 22 September 2026](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-opus-5-5)).

- **Positioning.** Fable 5.1 level on most work, 40% cheaper to run than Opus 5.
- **API price.** $4 per million input tokens, $20 per million output.
- **What Anthropic highlights.** Code, agents, computer use: 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0.
- **What it leaves out.** Motion design, animation, video: none of it is in the announcement.

**A community reputation**: in launch week, creators posted animated videos made with it, often in Claude Code ([OfficeChai](https://officechai.com/ai/claude-opus-5-5-motion-graphic-videos/)).

## What have people actually made with it?

Short films, explainers, demo reels, product launches. Three well-documented ones:

- **A motion designer demo reel.** Leon Abboud: 15 minutes, from a one-sentence prompt ([OfficeChai](https://officechai.com/ai/claude-opus-5-5-motion-graphic-videos/)).
- **A 3-minute history of AI.** "Every frame is rendered from code", about 7,400 lines.
- **A 90-second piece with its own piano score.** Animation and music, both written in code ([daily.dev](https://daily.dev/posts/claude-opus-5-5-generates-motion-design-and-visual-scenes-entirely-in-code-yqmdx7qnw)).

The method never changes. The model writes code that draws each frame, often HTML with canvas or three.js.

The frames are then rendered into an MP4.

## What are the limits?

The demos are real, and so are the limits:

- **It's rarely one prompt.** Charlie Hills needed "the exact states, a good reference and a few rounds of fixes" ([Charlie Hills](https://charliehills.substack.com/p/opus-55-motion-graphics)).
- **Some subjects look off.** Per daily.dev: animals, living things, overexposed lighting.
- **Long renders burn tokens.** The same roundup flags their cost.

**What's left to you**: "The leftover job is taste," says a developer quoted by daily.dev.

Taste is an editor's job. So the real question: how do these animations reach a Premiere timeline, on time?

## How do you use Opus 5.5 for motion design in Premiere Pro?

Two routes: build it yourself with Claude Code, or let an agent do it inside Premiere.

| | Claude Code + Remotion (do it yourself) | Ask AI in Premiere (Black Hat Editor Tools) |
|---|---|---|
| **Where you type** | A terminal, in a code project | The chat tab of the Premiere panel |
| **What Claude writes** | React (Remotion) or HTML | HTML + GSAP, from a catalog of ready-made blocks |
| **What you get** | A video file to import | A ProRes 4444 clip with transparency, already on the timeline |
| **Timing** | You place it by hand | Anchored on the words it illustrates |
| **Edits** | Edit the code, re-render, re-import | One sentence; the clip is replaced in place |
| **Cost** | Your Claude plan; Remotion free up to 3 employees | Your Claude plan + plugin from $15/month |

**Where Claude Code + Remotion wins**: free for individuals and small teams, and full control of the code.
**What it does better**: you stay in Premiere, and the clip lands on the right word.

## What's the do-it-yourself route with Claude Code and Remotion?

Remotion, the React video framework, has an official Claude Code plugin ([Remotion](https://www.remotion.dev/docs/ai/claude-code-plugin)):

`claude plugin marketplace add remotion-dev/claude-code-plugin`

`claude plugin install remotion@remotion`

Restart Claude Code, pick Opus 5.5, describe the animation.

Claude builds and renders the Remotion project. You import the file and place it yourself.

## How does Ask AI create motion design inside Premiere?

The [Ask AI agent](https://blackhateditors.com/tools/en/features/ask-ai/) runs Claude Code on your machine, wired to the plugin's tools.

Opus 5.5 is its default model.

![The Ask AI panel in Act mode with Opus 5.5. Request: animate the number 3 million right when it is said. The agent reads the transcript, browses the animation catalog, installs a block and generates the animation, placed at 2:14 on the Motion Design track. Second request: a variation in orange; it is placed above the original, on the Motion Design Variations track.](https://blackhateditors.com/blog/assets/claude-opus-5-5-motion-design-premiere-pro/ask-ai-motion-en.webp)
*The real panel, rendered with demo data: one sentence per animation or variation.*

Four steps, no code to write:

1. **Open the Act tab, check the model.** The header shows `Opus 5.5 · max quality` by default.
2. **Set the look under the chat.** Background (transparent by default), brand color, fonts.
3. **Say what to animate.** `Animate the number "3 million" right when it is said.`
4. **Watch the timeline.** The clip lands on the Motion Design track, on the words it illustrates.

Behind that sentence, the agent first searches a catalog of ready-made blocks: counters, charts, maps, lower thirds.

It adapts the closest one in HTML and GSAP, renders it locally, and converts it to ProRes 4444 with alpha.

![Four steps from left to right: your sentence, a catalog block such as a counter or chart, HTML plus GSAP written by Claude and rendered locally, then a ProRes 4444 clip on the Motion Design track at the spoken word. Below, two loops: retouch in the same spot, or a variation on a track above.](https://blackhateditors.com/blog/assets/claude-opus-5-5-motion-design-premiere-pro/motion-loop-en.webp)
*From one sentence to a clip on the timeline, then retouches or variations.*

**Several animations at once**: the agent renders them all, then places them in one go. The timeline stays still while you work.

## Can you edit the animation afterwards?

Yes: by hand in Premiere, or with another sentence to the agent.

### In Premiere — a regular clip

The animation is a `.mov` on its own track. Move it, trim it, scale it in Effect Controls.

Its text and colors are baked in: it's a rendered video, not an editable title.

### With Ask AI — retouches and variations

Ask in plain words. The agent edits the code, renders again, swaps the clip.

`Make the animation title yellow, and bigger.`

`Fix the word "method" in the animation.`

`Make me a new variation of this animation, in orange.`

- **A retouch replaces the clip.** Same exact spot as the old one.
- **A variation keeps the original.** The new one sits above, on a "Motion Design Variations" track.
- **Comparing is a click.** Toggle one track's visibility.
- **Moved the clip by hand?** Give the new timecode; otherwise the agent uses the one it remembers.

### Beyond the first animation

More requests that map to real plugin tools:

- **Keep your taste.** `Keep this animation in my library, chapters category.`
- **Set a rule.** `Remember: never a black background again.`
- **Add sound.** `Add sound to the animation with whooshes and pops.` Sounds come from your SFX library.
- **Animate a route.** `Animate the Paris → Shanghai route when I talk about it.`

## Remotion or HTML + GSAP: which does the plugin use?

Both live in the plugin, for different jobs:

- **Remotion renders the captions.** The animated subtitle styles are Remotion compositions.
- **The agent animates in HTML + GSAP.** Its Remotion creation tools are blocked on purpose: GSAP gave richer motion.

Searched "Claude Remotion"? In our plugin, Claude writes GSAP. The do-it-yourself route above is the Remotion one.

## What does it cost?

Two bills, kept separate:

- **Claude.** Your Claude account (Pro or Max) or Anthropic API key. Not included.
- **The plugin.** Ask AI comes with Essentiel ($15/month) or Pro ($40/month). Not in the free plan.
- **The trial.** Pro is free for 14 days, card required, then $40/month.

**No video credits**: rendering runs on your machine.

Setup takes about five minutes: see the [plugin installation guide](https://blackhateditors.com/help/en/installer-plugin/).

## In short

- **Opus 5.5** writes motion design as code; creators, not Anthropic, made it famous for it.
- **Expect iterations**: references, precise states, rounds of fixes.
- **In Premiere**, Ask AI turns one sentence into a transparent clip on the right word.
